Forklift Safety: Building a Safer Jobsite Through Proper Training and Operation
May 22, 2026
Forklifts and powered industrial trucks play a critical role in construction and industrial operations, helping crews move materials efficiently across jobsites and facilities. But when not operated properly, forklifts can quickly become one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment on site.
At Century Contractors, safety is not just a policy. It is a core part of how we operate every day. Our forklift safety procedures are designed to protect our employees, subcontractors, and everyone working around powered mobile equipment by emphasizing training, accountability, and proper operational practices. Century requires that only authorized and properly trained employees operate mobile equipment, and operators must complete the appropriate training and proficiency testing before being approved.
Forklift incidents can lead to serious injuries, equipment damage, lost productivity, and even fatalities. Many forklift accidents occur due to preventable causes such as:
- Operator inexperience
- Poor visibility
- Excessive speed
- Improper loading
- Lack of inspections
- Failure to follow established procedures
Because of these risks, forklift safety requires more than simply knowing how to drive the equipment. It demands consistent awareness, discipline, and adherence to proven safety protocols.
Forklift Safety Best Practices
1. Only Certified Operators Should Be Behind the Wheel
Forklift operation should never be treated casually. Only trained, certified, and authorized personnel are permitted to operate forklifts at Century Contractors. Operators must understand the equipment, applicable regulations, and the safe operating procedures specific to the machine they are using.
2. Perform Pre-Shift Equipment Inspection
Before each shift, operators should inspect their forklift to ensure it is in safe working condition. This includes checking:
- Brakes
- Steering
- Controls
- Horn
- Forks and mast
- Lights
- Backup alarms
- Seatbelts
- Fire extinguishers
- Hydraulic systems/leaks
If defects or unsafe conditions are identified, the equipment must be reported immediately and removed from service until corrected.
3. Always wear your seat belt
Seatbelts are a simple but critical safety measure. Every forklift equipped with a seatbelt requires the operator to wear it before operation begins. In the event of a tip-over, wearing a seatbelt can prevent operators from being thrown from the cab or crushed.
4. Maintain awareness of your surroundings
Operators must remain alert at all times and maintain full awareness of the environment around them, using a spotter when necessary. This includes:
- Conducting a 360-degree visual inspection before startup
- Using a spotter and slowing down at intersections and blind corners
- Sounding the horn when necessary
- Watching for pedestrians and maintaining safe clearance
- Using a spotter and looking behind before reversing
Century requires operators to ensure no worker is endangered before starting powered mobile equipment.
5. Never Exceed Load Capacity
Each forklift has a clearly posted load rating chart, and operators must never exceed the equipment’s rated load capacity. Loads should always be centered, secured, and stable before movement begins. Overloading or improperly balancing materials increases the risk of tipping, dropped loads, and structural failure.
6. Park Equipment Properly
When leaving a forklift unattended, operators must:
- Fully lower forks or attachments
- Set the parking brake
- Place controls in neutral/park
- Shut off power when appropriate
- Secure against unintended movement
Proper parking reduces the risk of accidental movement or unauthorized use.
Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility.
Forklift safety does not rest solely on the operator. Supervisors, site managers, and nearby personnel all play a role in maintaining a safe work environment. Supervisors must never permit unsafe equipment operation, and all workers should report unsafe conditions immediately. Century’s safety program emphasizes shared accountability across every level of the organization. Century’s Commitment to Safe Operations
At Century Contractors, maintaining a safe job site starts with proactive planning, strong procedures, and empowering employees to prioritize safety in every task. Forklift safety is one of many ways we ensure our teams go home safely at the end of each day. Through proper training, routine inspections, and disciplined operation, we help reduce risk while maintaining efficiency on every project we support.
