PIPE WELDER (Non-Exempt)

Summary of Position:

Here are Century, our craft personnel are at the very core of who we are.  A qualified Pipe Welder will plan, lay-out, weld, install, test and repair all types of pipe and similar tubular products in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. The candidate may also work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities (additional site specific duties may be assigned as required):

  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. 
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble, weld and install all types of pipe and/or similar tubular products; install supports, valves and other control equipment; test installed piping systems and install all other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications; bolt, clamp or weld parts to secure in position for welding; weld components according to specific process and code.
  • Weld separately or in combination, using aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other alloys. 
  • Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals. 
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
  • Follow established job-site safety and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work area.
  • Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or minimize hazards.

Qualifications:

  • Education (experience may be accepted in lieu of some educational requirements): High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) required.  Additional trade school certification highly preferred.
  • Experience: 3 years’ welding experience preferred. Must pass the prescribed weld test.
  • Communication Skills: Comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to understand information, ideas, direction and then be able to perform the task or project discussed. Also, to be able to ask questions to insure you understand the information given.
  • Must have a working knowledge of various welding codes, specifications, techniques and methods.
  • Must be familiar with properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques
